And that conversation started with how great and amazing traveling is. How as a traveler, you find your true self, how you conquer goals you have set for yourself everyday, how each day really is a new day unique and vibrant and completely different than the last, how you are the creator of your future, and just how empowered and happy you become while traveling. And the conversation goes on to what is going to happen when the traveling has stopped, when you have returned home.

And many people I talked with began describing that they would need to get a job, pay for bills etc, etc. And they talked about living in the exact same way they were living before they left to travel.

Now that may not seem odd to you, but this kind of talk threw me for a loop.

Why did it throw me for a loop?

Maybe because I defined MY traveling differently.

Many times people back home would tell me after I told them of my plans to travel across South America for 4 months, that I was taking an extended vacation. To be honest with you, I despised this statement because it implied some things that were not true about my trip.

1. A Vacation is basically a break from your routine. A time to relax. A time to reset. And what is implied is that after vacation, you go back to doing the same things you were doing before vacation.

2. An Extended Vacation is all the things that a Vacation is, just longer. A longer time to relax. A longer time to reset. And after extended vacation, you go back to doing the same things you were doing before extended vacation.

Maybe I'm wierd, but I traveled because I was unhappy with my life, in my first post I talked about deadlines and work life and that "I'm not looking for a paved road. I'm looking to make my own."

My trip was about learning. If I was unhappy before, I was do something wrong, and so I set off on my trip to learn about myself, learn about others, explore, discover. And with the things I learned along the way, I have no desire to live my life the same way I was before I left.

With that being said, 2016 has brought on a new test. The test is to continue conquering goals I have set for myself everyday, noticing that each day really is a new day unique and vibrant and completely different than the last, creating my future, and staying empowered and happy. And in addition, I want to share what I've learned along the way.

One of the ways I am sharing is through articles I write on my website HugSonnyHey.com

And some of my big goals are:

1. Creating a website for foreigners full of information on traveling and backpacking through the US. The site will provide information on cities, purchasing cars, hiking national parks, etc written by us locals living in the USA. If you have something to say about where you live I would love for you to contribute! There is nothing like this that exists! That website will be fully launched Feb 15 of this year...If you would like to check it out now it is ShoobyUSA.com. If you would like to write an article on ShoobyUSA's blog definitely email me at Hughey.Sonny@gmail.com

2. Riding Horseback with limited supplies from the end of the Colorado River Delta in Baja California to its beginning at La Poudre Pass at the center of the continental divide. I plan to begin this trip, March 1st, 2018.

Traveling these past four months taught me three things. 1. I am the most resourceful person I know and I have achieved, experienced, and done everything in life that i've wanted to up through now. 2. Every person's limits are drawn in the sands where they themselves put them. 3. I passionately want to achieve the first sentence of this post.
I am traversing all of America to start on this path of accomplishing this goal. City to city, baseball stadium to stadium, friend to helper, learning and leaping closer to the next step. I am the person I want to be. And I am doing what I want to do. Cheers, to reaching high.

I saw a lot of great bands starting with Dillan Frankenwriter spanning from the Kooks to great Chilean bands including Los Tetas and Astro, Back to dillon Francis, chet Faker, and Kings of Leon, Kasabian, jr gong marley, the Smashing Pumpkins. Bands that absolutely killed it were Alt-j, who played at a smaller stage as the sun began to descend into the late afternoon, perfect vibe for their sound......the forerunners of Ska, the Specials, Cypress Hill in a indoor stadium, packed to the third deck, Robert Plant, one of the guys who made Lolla a possibility to exist, and an absolute maniac and true genius on the stagee, Jack White. Here are a couple pics from the festivities....

Concepcion was great, i stayed with Luca, a friend of a friend, who lives in Concepcion and he showed me a great time. There was a 9.2 earthquake in Concepcion in 2010 andthe city pretty much was an everybody for themselves situation for a week. But the structural engineering is so good here in Chile that thw city looked in great shape. You couldnt even tell there was a major catastrophe here just five years ago. Concepcion is a great city, full of young people, it is a big college town....not one that many tourists frequent, so it was very sweet to stay and hang. I wish i could have stayed longer. Anyways here are some more pics. Last one is us eating the best empanadas in the world! From a small shop on the side of the road about a half an hour outside of concepcion, whole in the wall or ______ as they say here.
The countdown begins and im super stoked for this upcoming weekend, but there is still more slated and lots that has happened since last post.....
I am in the town of Pucon, the base camp sitting under Chile's most dangerous and active Volcanoe, Villarica, which exploded hot creamy lava last week over the surrounding area. I got here after spending the we,kend in Puert Varas, an old German town just west of the Andes and north of the port town Puert Montt, which is also sanwhiched between a lake and two volcanoes, you can see that in one of the pics. Yesterday, i took a full day tour of Chiloe, the magical and mysterious island just off the coast in the Pacific, and also the end of the great intercontinental highway we call in San Diego "The 5". On the island they have really cool buildings, the houses one one side of the road are built on top of the water. Guess they like to maximize their space. After that tour I immediately jumped on a red eye bus up the five to Temuco, from where I had to ditch the bus at 3:00am and hacer dedo (hitch hike) into Pucon. I realized after a while its probably quite creepy/horror filmish to be hitchiking in the middle of the night, so it was a quick power camp next to the interstate and catch a ride 100km into Pucon. On tap for today is some level 5 rapids and a hot springs sesh in the evening with the hostel. Then onto Concepcion tomorrow!
Here are some pics of the last couple of days.

I am now there at llanada grande, a small pueblo along a new unpaved road waiting to take a bus through to puerto Varas. I did not expect to make it this far, however i was picked up almost immediately along the road by a vacationing couple in their later years who brought me to this little town strip. After buying a pisco from the convenience store to celebrate i was stopped outside of town by a topographer, as i was looking for a suitable place to camp alongside the road. After talking for several minutes in my broken spanish with him he took me to a friends house farther up the road where they were happy to let me camp alongside their crystal clear and amazingly fresh flowing river. I slept great apart from the rooster who thought the sun was coming up and 330 in the morning, and happened to also be a stubborn rooster at that. But i am super stoked to start day two here and am very excited to spend my last month in chile, hopefully it will be just as fun and interesting as yesterday.

Yesterday, being the day that this journal is about was just as good as the first to start. After catching the jankiest bus in the world, piled high with luggage from all the locals traveling to the port city from deep in the Chilean forest the bus came to an abrupt stop at a lake. It turns out, part of the bus trip included a necessary boat travel across a Patagonia Lake to get to where the road picked up again! Total cost for the boat was two dollars, and the views were incredible. Truely a great suprise.
Heading down to Bariloche the final city in Argentina before i cross the border into Chile. My time at the ranch is over now. What a fun place, i was able to install the infamous jacuzzi hottub and firebox, my main project given to me upon arrival. But not only that, there were so many great things i did there including working with Gauchos every day, riding horses, leading two pack trips, camping, cow wrangling, horse round ups, goat butchering, making bread from scratch, fires, and lots of wine and whiskey. Just finished a three day hike out of there, Ranquilco. Most people take a taxi after an easy two hour horse ride, after some talks with Ashley an old route out was the way i took. Left based upon the directions of the Patron of the ranch, Ashley, "Just follow the Trocomon (river) and go South. Turns out the Trocomon leads to the west and into Chile, not to the destination i was headed, Caviahue, a small ski town. But with a handy "food drop" and after several talks with Gauchos along the way and their inconsistent directions along with my Logistics amigo Ethan we made it to the town. No map needed! Here are some pics from the trekking adventure. And a map of our path.
The sun is setting and the view out the window reminds me of my long drives out to Hastings every year. Minus the corn. I am on the final leg to the destination I have been planning to get to for the past 6 months, El Chalten, the trekers capital of the world, and a place that is supposed to be without big tourist crowds, mostly backpackers and enjoyers of the unpaved trail. I spent the last two days hitchiking through the lake district of Patagonia. One thing I can say is that the place is green and blue and very green and blue at that, no filter needed. Argentines are one of the friendliest slash most conversational people I have met. With every day they seem to grow on me more and more. Well the suns glow has almost dissapearred over the horizon and the pirated copy of Anchorman 2 is done playing on the bus tv, my light is fading. Ciao for now.'
Its been a while since my last post but today I have somw free time and a good internet connection, which is quite rare in these parts. One of the most exciting things about going to Patagonia is "being off the map" but it doesnt sink in that doing that includes no wifi, no internet, pretty much todos los dias haha. Anyways I did a little bit of journaling during my recent trip down to El Chalten. I'm going to copy what i wrote onto this for you guys.

'I woke up ion the second deck of the omnibus i was taking from zapala tto san martin de los andes. I peer out my window to see a steady swarm of people mobbing in a slow walk across the bus' path down the entire cross street. After 5-10 minutes there is a gap in the people enough for the bus to pull forward and part the sea. I look down the road and the people seem to go on for many blocks.
Fifteen minutes later I have arrived at the bus station in San Martin and look for a bus that will take me to Bariloche, the launch pad place for the one bus that will take me south to El Chalten. All the kiosks are closed until 10am tomorrow except for one. The one kiosk that is open tells me all the buses to Bariloche are sold out for tomorrow. So I decide to walk outsie and come to find I am very close to the epicenter where all the people are heading. I decided to see what all the commotion was abput. I walk towards the mariache/tango/rock music and take in what I see. Not much is going on, it seems everyone is waiting for something....
I continue to walk and see in the shadows a large group of people standing and facing a darkness. I approach the edge of the crowd and post up at the base of a tree, standing on its roots to get a better view. In front of me are thousands of people pearing out onto a lake. I hear two girls next to me talking in spanish about the new year. After about 15 minutes the crowd is becoming a little restless, there is clapping and cheering and a boat begins pointing its search light into the crowd.
Then it begins, fireworks start shooting out from the side of the lake above everyone like a misty storm of lights. They are really cool. Bright, loud, and ones with long long tails that stay lit all the way until they hit the water. It was very nice, and quite calming compared to firework shows i have seen in the usa. The grand finale was what was really special. The sky was overloaded with the long streamer fireworks and it was like watching lava falling from the sky. But not scary lava from a volcanoe, but cotton candy lava splashing into the lake a lighting up the entire crowd and surrounding area. What a night, and how unexpected. Tomorrow should be just as interesting though, it lloks like i will have to hitchike through the lake district to get to Bariloche on time.'
The pictures are of the lake and San Martin de Los Andes, where the fireworks were. I ended up hitchiking to Villa La Angusturo about two hours away from Bariloche the next day. There were many young Argentinians vacationing in the area, so there were a lot of hitchhikers out which made it difficult to get a ride. There are seven lakes between San Martin and Bariloche, many Portenos, people from Buenos Aires camp for a couple weeks, spending a couple nights at each lake and hitchiking to the next lake until they have done all seven. When I got to Villa La Angusturo, I then took a bus to get to Bariloche at midnight. The bus station was closed so I camped out overnight at the Bariloche bus station. The last picture is the sunrise I woke up to there.
Hey all! Sorry I haven't been posting, but the Internet is very limited at the ranch I am staying at. I am having a great time and the place is amazing. Great people fantastic views, horses, parties, and lots of good meat and wine. One morning inparticulate was quite cool. I was having breakfast in my kitchen with a gaucho three volunteers, a (German, a swede, and American), and the swedes little brother. At one moment there were four different languages being spoken across several lively conversations. It was truly a unique experience.

What a great day yesterday. It started with a 10 hour red eye flight where I had to an entire row to myself. Yes I had three seats to myself and I was living like a king.

My second flight was from Sao Paulo Brazil to Buenos Aires and it was like jumping into a pool for the first-time. I was the only one on the flight that didn't speak fluent Spanish. It was definitely a shock, but something I enjoyed. And the atmosphere of the flight was much different too. In the US nobody talks to each other, each person gets in their seats, puts their headphones on and counts down the minutes until the plane lands in the next destination. On this flight everybody was talking to each other as if it was a family thanksgiving. I slept through most of the flight but the majority of my dreams were in Spanish partly in thanks to the middle aged couple sharing the row with me.

Upon arrival in Buenos Aires, my goal was finding Calle Florida where they exchange pesos for dollars at a much better rate than the banks do. I was able to get 12.5 pesos per dollar. From there I intended to head towards my Hostel, however I found myself getting caught up in the amazing scenery and vibrance that is Buenos Aires. The city is definitely one of a kind with a perfect blend of high rises and lushes trees and parks mixed into one. It is as if they built the city in the middle of a forest but built around the forest. Trees line the sidewalks where they're used to support telephone and power lines instead of a brown wood tower. There are so many people, it reminded me of times square, but tenfold at a much larger radius. No one walks slow, cars drive with a purpose, and there is an abundance of motorcycles from the 70's and 80's weaving through the streets and sidewalks. I saw a smile on the majority of people's faces and really feel like I'm in a place where so much can happen and such potential is available. There is an atmosphere of open arms here and it definitely feels safe. Here are some pics from the day. I'm not sure what the concrete tower is but it looks like a smaller version of the Washington Monument. Calle Florida is the second pic, and the others are from one of the parks in row middle of the city. The last picture is the big from the balcony outside of my Hostel room.

The trip has begun! My series of flights from San Diego to Buenos Aires included a 24 hour layover in Dallas. I have a couple of friends that live here and were nice enough to show me around Texas' capital. I went to the infamous grassy knoll where Kennedy was shot. There were two 'x's in the street marking the exact spots of where the bullets got him. Here are a couple of pictures. on the sixth floor of the building to the left of the road is where the suspected rifle shots came from..

There was also a cool park, Robert Lee Park, just on the outskirts of downtown in an area called Turtle Creek. It was a great area, reminded me of an up and coming North Park. Ironically it turns out it is a large gay community. (not that there is anything wrong with that) Below are some pictures of that.

It is strictly the essentials that will allow me to do anything from backpacking through Patagonia to working at the 100,000 acre self supporting ranch to enjoying the nightlife in Buenos Aires and Santiago. I have packed assuming the weather will be unpredictable, even though it will be summertime in the southern hemisphere, rain and possible snowfall can happen anytime in the Andes Mountains.

Went to the Chargers vs. Rams game yesterday with my amigo Cody yesterday. Our seats were awesome, they were right behind the west endzone in the second deck. We could see the play develop so well compared to watching on tv....But best of all the Chargers won! The game was following the typical Chargers storyline, they were making a lot of mistakes but the other team was making more...they had a two score lead going into the last four minutes of the game, the Rams scored a touchdown and then got the ball back and were about to score the game winning touchdown when out of nowhere the Chargers got an interception at the goal line to secure the win! They are in 2nd place in the AFC West and they've got a pretty good chance to make the playoffs. I hope they make a run, to the Superbowl, I'll find a way to watch it from Argentina! Aboves a cool picture of the field from our seats.SonnyandPeoplehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17994515052636514297noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7032786389826509619.post-52218556968977892832014-11-17T18:40:00.000-08:002014-11-17T18:43:09.629-08:00Water, Sun, and Fun

This past weekend I enjoyed a great day at Canyon Lake in Lake Elsinore with Keenan, Peters, Sam, Steph, and Jessica. The water was glassy and warm, the weather was beautiful and it was a great day all together. We all wakeboarded behind the boat, with different outcomes for each person but it was a blast all around! With the sun creeping away earlier with each day and the hand of winter upon us, it was a nice taste of summer that is still alive in southern california.
A good friend of mine recommended this book to me two days ago. And with the utmost enthusiasm I suggest if you haven't already, give The Alchemist a read. It's an easy read, a fable of a young boy who makes decisions in his life that may not make sense to the closest people around him, but decisions he knows are true to him.
I went scuba diving this week! It's a pretty cool story how it happened. I had previously gotten Open Water Certified in August, which means I can dive down to 60ft deep. When I got certified, I also bought fins and snorkel from the shop. Two weeks ago I went snorkeling with my friends and my snorkel had a hole in it, so it kept filling up with water! So i went to the shop to return it, and the shop was under new ownership. The new owner, Mike hooked me up anyways with a new snorkel and said if I want to come by the shop and go out and scuba, he goes all the time by the jetti in mission beach/bay.
So I dropped by the shop on Wednesday this week and went out with him and his friend. It was sweet! There were a couple seals that swam by us and we saw a lot of wildlife in the jetti rocks....goes down to about 30 ft.
I really hit it off with the new owners and we struck a deal. They will take me out scuba diving whenever I want in exchange for some volunteer time on my part, helping put the new shop together and getting it up and running. It's a sweet gig and I'm learning a lot about scuba gear, equipment, etc. as well as how to start up a new company.
If any of you are interested in getting scuba certified I say do it! It's awesome, quite a cool experience being in the world below land. The shop that I am helping out at used to be PB Sports and a new name is coming soon. Later!

Took the ski lifts up the mountain, but rode mountain bikes down. It was such an adrenaline rush. What a blast. I have a little war wound from a slide out on one of the berms.
It was my last day of work yesterday and the first afternoon of this extended time off. And to start it off with a bang I received a call from my neighbor telling me to come outside and see what was happening across the street. A car had literally exploded and ran into the back of my parked pickup. This is a hell of sign that these next months are going to be nowhere close to ordinary.

I was very close to backing out and not doing it and after a phone conversation with my dad I almost believed I made a bad choice. I chose to go, come December 1st and by doing so I chose to pass on an offer to work for a great company in a new position. A position that I would excel at.

But the reason I chose to do what I am doing is because I have my whole life to work. Right now I want to explore while I have the chance. I want to be with people who are different and I don't understand. And I don't want to figure them out, I want to just be and react and have fun. I don't want to worry about a deadline. I can't remember the last time I didn't have a deadline decided by someone else for me. I had a deadline in 1st grade when Ms. Falls gave out my first book report assignment and I have had an assignment ever since.

I am going to have six months where I can do anything I want, it's up to me. And it's going to be incredible, its going to hard, because with unlimited freedom comes much personal responsibility. It's going to be completely unknown and I am scared and excited at the same time.

Think what you want about it. But I don't care. It might not be the smart decision, but its the decision I won't regret. I'm not looking for a paved road. I'm looking to make my own.
